Coming to Bone Black directly from a residency at Vyt in New York, Heraa Khan hails from Lahore, Pakistan where she specializes in traditional Persian miniature painting. Khan is a graduate of the National College of Arts, the only college in the world that offers a degree in the Mughal atelier system. It is a technique full of ritual. Artists take off their shoes before entering the studio and sit on the floor against a wall, supporting their painting boards on their knees. Khan also makes her own brushes from squirrel hair. These historical aspects of the technique are contrasted with Khan's depiction of person's interacting with modern objects. These small works on paper reflect the state of our world, where the ancient and contemporary meet daily. A reception will be held for the artist on Saturday, May 7th from 7-9pm. Khan will also be offering a workshop while she is in Austin.
